Week 4 Reading Diary A: A History of Ravana

This version of the Ramayana is so different from the first version, so far! It is written from a totally different perspective, and starts from a completely different point in time, from what I have understood. I find it interesting how much of the first reading diary is focused on Ravana, and the different battles that he undertakes.

-I find it interesting that the supreme god gives in to the pleas of his subjects, because they twist his arm or intimidate him.
-I also find the things they ask for interesting. Such as sleeping for six months, or being immortal. These are on opposite ends of the spectrum, when you could ask for basically anything.
- I thought it weird that Buck glossed over how Rama and Lakshmana became students of Vishwamitra, and how he had to talk Dasharatha into it.
- I was also sad to see how short the part about Rama winning Sita's love was!

Overall, I like the new perspective. It offers details on different parts of the story that I hadn't thought of. I want to look into doing a more in-depth story about one of Ravana's battles, or maybe the battle of Heaven.

  1. Like you, I am finding this version of The Ramayana to be quite different from the one we read previously. I am also sad that it so quickly glossed over the first meeting of Rama and Sita and how they fell in love. There is so much detail in the rest of this version, yet Buck did not include it in what was quite frankly one of my favorite parts of the other version. But, it is nice to see different stories come into play in this version.
