I have decided to do my StoryBook over a journey back in time, to the creation of four Hindu Temples in New Delhi, India. The four temples will be The Hanuman temple, the Kalkaji Mandir, the Yogmaya temple, and the Nili Chatri Mahadev. All of these temples are located throughout Delhi, and are believed to have been in existence during the days of the Mahabharata.
Right now, I am looking into more of an anthology StoryBook. I would like to write stories that have to do with the creation of each of the temples, and the gods that are mainly worshipped in them/why those gods or idols have a temple made for them. If I go through with this storybook, I plan to visit all of the temples to see their character and get a better feel for why the temples were made and what gods are mainly worshipped in them.
The Hanuman Temple:
This temple obviously worships an idol of Hanuman. The temple in itself is interesting, because at the top of one of its spires it bears the crescent and star symbol. Nevertheless, it is a Hindu temple with paintings of the epic, The Ramayana. My idea for the creation of this temple is to write a story where Hanuman is honored for his service to Rama, and rescue of Sita, by receiving his own temple. I will probably go see the temple myself, because it is not very far from my flat.
The Kalkaji Mandir:
This is a temple that I have already visited. It is small, but has much history behind it. It is located near the famous Lotus Temple. This temple is dedicated to the worship of Kali, and has roots back to Shiva as well. There is a lot of information on what Kali did and why she is worshipped in this temple, and I would like to elaborate on those stories and give a reason behind the temple.
As for styles, I plan to write this in the form of an anthology as of right now. I imagine that I could write it in framework style, but I will have to ponder for a while how I could work this all together. For this set of stories, I think it would be interesting to write in a variety of different styles. I like the idea of writing in first person, but I want to expand my options. I have looked around, and found that writing in third-person will add a fun and interesting twist, specifically in a modernizing style. It would be fun to write a modernized version of the creation of the temples of Delhi. I also like the time travel idea. Maybe Hanuman is traveling back and forth between the times of Rama, and the modern world. Based on what he does in the times of Rama, he gets a bigger, or smaller, temple. He could hop back and forth between the two time periods to survey his actions and plot a course for getting the biggest temple. For first-person styles I like the idea of letter-writing and traveler as narrator. So, I have chosen a mix of first and third-person styles. I'll be excited to start writing!
